Pets are a big part of our lives; they are often considered part of our family.  We need to make sure that we keep our pets safe inside our homes.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) pets and wild animals are responsible for starting 750 home fires each year.  The following are a few sources that your pet may have exposure to:

  • Cooking equipment
  • Fireplaces
  • Chimneys
  • Space heaters
  • Lamps
  • Bulbs
  • Wiring
  • Candles

Here are a few safety tips from NFPA to keep your pets safe in your home:

  • Pets may bump into, turn on, or knock over cooking equipment so keep them away from stoves and countertops.
  • Keep pets away from candles, lamps, and space heaters.
  • Use a heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace and keep it in place.
  • Keep pets away from chimney’s outside vents.
  • Create a “pet-free zone” of at least three feet away from the fireplace.
  • Use battery-operated, flameless candles.
  • Keep pets away from electrical cords that they might want to chew.
  • Make sure your pets are included in your emergency evacuation plan.
