Frozen Pipes can lead to Water Damage

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help if you experience water damage caused from winter weather.

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel.  If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

FROZEN PIPES

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets. A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross.

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

If winter weather causes water damage to your property, SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook is available to help – Call us at (630) 573-4290.

The Importance of a Smoke Alarm

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

Keep your Smoke Alarms Working!

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including the basement.  Extra smoke alarms may be needed in large homes.

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button.  Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years.  Other alarms need batteries replaced every year, and the unit replaced every ten years.  If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately.  Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm.

Be sure your home has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills with your family. For more information on Emergency Preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook.

Heating Safety Tips!

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

Stay warm & safe this winter!

Winter season is here and with it comes shorter days and lower temperatures.  No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather.  Many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves to help keep homes cozy.

Did you know, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths? According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires cause an estimated $1 billion in direct property damage annually.  Keep the following safety tips in mind to help reduce your risk of a heating-related fire.

  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container.  Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

If your property does suffer from fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook – (630) 573-4290.

Fire Prevention Week

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help if you have Fire Damage.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

Fire Prevention week for 2018 will be on October 7th through October 13th 2018 and this year’s campaign is, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire––and how to escape safely in the event of one:

LOOK

Look for places that a fire can start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

LISTEN

Listen for the sound of a smoke alarm.  You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

LEARN

Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Be Prepared for Hurricane Season!

Hurricane season is currently underway. For the Atlantic, the season begins June 1 and runs through November 30.  The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began in mid-May and also ends November 30.

Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane.  Plan an evacuation route and your emergency plan, take inventory of your property, and take steps to protect your home or business.  For more information and preparation tips, visit the Ready campaign website at www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

Be Prepared if Lightning Strikes!

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

Stay safe during a thunderstorm that brings lightning with it!

We say in Chicaoland wait a few minutes and the weather will change.  These are words to prepare for in the event of a thunderstorm that brings lightning with it!  If possible, postpone your trip or activity if the weather forecast calls for a thunderstorm.  If you need to venture out in the storm here are a few tips from the CDC to keep you safe:

Safety tips for Outdoors:

  • Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors. Find a safe, enclosed shelter.
  • The main lightning safety guide is the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
  • If no shelter is available, crouch low, with as little of your body touching the ground as possible. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly over 100 feet away.
  • Stay away from concrete floors or walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Safety Tips for Indoors:

  • Avoid water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
  • Avoid electronic equipment of all types. Lightning can travel through electrical systems and radio and television reception systems.
  • Avoid corded phones. However, cordless or cellular phones are safe to use during a storm.
  • Avoid concrete floors and walls.

Lightning strikes may be rare, but they still happen and the risk of serious injury or death is severe. So take thunderstorms seriously.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook is here in your community, if you experience any Flood Damage due to Thunderstorms, give us a call at 630-573-4290.

Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290 to remove unwanted odors caused by smoke damage.

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we seek out and remove the sources of the odor.

If you or a customer suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290.

Whether it’s fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Beware! - It's the Water you don't see that can cause Damage.

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

This is a Moisture Meter - just one of many tools used by SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook to detect unseen water.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook Professionals have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform.  SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools that we use:

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO to monitor the drying process.

Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity.  SERVPRO can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and deodorized.

Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.

Contact SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290 if you experience water damage, we are always here to help!

The PASS method is a simple training technique for fire extinguishers:

·        P - Pull the pin on the extinguisher.

·        A - Aim the hose nozzle low toward the base of the fire.

·        S - Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

·        S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the flames until extinguished.

Fire extinguishers are meant to handle only small fires. If a fire becomes too large or the environment becomes too dangerous, employees should know when and how to evacuate the area.  If appropriate, sound the fire alarm or call the fire department immediately.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook is always available to help if your business has incurred damage from a fire.  Please call us at 630-573-4290.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning.

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook will help keep your carpets clean.

Even the highest-quality items can show soiling over time. Protect your investment by calling SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook to clean and maintain your commercial carpets.

Preventative Maintenance

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet.

IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Professional Cleaning

Professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your commercial carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months.

The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil.  Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook Professionals will get the job done right. For a cleaning backed by state-of-the-art equipment and Professionals trained to the highest standards, call us today.

Summer is Here - Watch out for Extreme Heat!

6/28/2018 (Permalink)

Use these helpful tips to stay safe during a heat wave.

Summer has arrived in Chicagoland and so has the extreme heat.  Please stay safe with the help of these tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, choose places you could go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, theaters, malls).
  • Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

Recognize and care for heat related emergencies:

Heat exhaustion typically involves the loss of body fluids through heavy sweating during strenuous exercise or physical labor in high heat and humidity.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition in which a person’s temperature control system stops working and the body is unable to cool itself.

Fireworks Safety Tips

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Safe! Follow these Fireworks safety tips.

The number of Americans planning to use backyard fireworks this Fourth of July is expected to hit an all-time high.  In preparation for holiday celebrations, The Consumer Products Safety Commission encourages consumers to review all safety tips before purchasing and using fireworks.

Fireworks are dangerous!

Follow these safety tips when using fireworks:

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go see a display put on by the professionals. This allows you to enjoy the show with little worry of bodily harm or property damage. SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook wants you to enjoy the festivities safely with family and friends.

Grilling Safety Tips

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Grilling Season has arrived - Please stay safe by following these tips!

Summer time is upon us and there’s nothing like outdoor grilling.

Follow these tips provided by the National Fire Protection Association to make sure you are safe when grilling.

General grilling tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Propane grills

Before you use your grill:

  • Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
  • Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
    • Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
    • If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
  • If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.

When the grill is on:

  • As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
  • If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.

Charcoal grills

  • There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

It is important to remember these safety tips – and that you can count on SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook if you need us – Call us at 630-573-4290.

Tips to prevent Water Damage from your Washing Machine.

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

If your Washing Machine causes water damage to your home, cal SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook!

Washing machines are one of the most common sources of water damage in your home.

The failure of a water supply hose is the primary cause of loss.  This can be caused by:

  • Pinching the hose while installing or replacing a washing machine, causing a hairline break
  • A poor connection to either the washing machine or wall
  • The hose’s own aging, which can lead to brittleness

Washing machine drainage issues and internal leaks can also cause flooding to your home.

The most effective ways of preventing damage from your washing machine are to:

  • Replace the washing machine intake hose every 5 years
  • Check your sewer line after a storm, before running your washing machine
  • Don’t overload your washing machine
  • Have your machine professionally installed to avoid water line pinches and drainage issues
  • Shut off the intake valve behind your machine at the first sign of trouble
  • If you can’t access the intake valve, know how to shut off your home’s water main

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help you if you experience water damage from your washing machine.

Failing Water Heater? Look for these signs!

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

Maintain your Water Heater to avoid water damage to your home.

Water heaters often work perfectly for a decade or more without any care, so they’re easy to neglect.  They are often located in a low traffic area, like a basement, an attic or in a closet.

Failing water heaters can cause significant damage to your home if they start leaking or even worse, if they burst leaving several gallons of water flowing through your home.

Here are a few things that may indicate if your water heater is starting to fail:

  • Water doesn't get as hot as it used to.
  • There's rust in water coming from your faucets or on your clothes.
  • Your hot water heater makes cracking and popping sounds when it's heating.
  • There's a metallic taste in your hot water.
  • Rust is forming on the outside bottom of your water heater.
  • A puddle is forming under your hot water heater.
  • The burner units have become clogged or rusty.

If you experience flooding from your water heater, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook for assistance.  Call (630) 573-4290.

Tips for Cleaning Mold from Children’s Bath Toys

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

If you see signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook - (630) 573-4290

Cleaning bath toys that spend hours every week in warm soapy water may seem silly, but it is not.

Since mold grows where there is moisture, bath toys are a prime target for mold.  Mold can form when toys aren’t properly drained or dried out.  Here are some tips to help you clean your bath toys and get them free of mold.

Boil the toys in water

Place your child’s toys in a pot of boiling water. Squeeze them out to remove all the mold and then lay them out to dry.

Clean them with vinegar

Mix together one gallon of water and ½ cup of white vinegar. Let the toys soak in the mixture for one hour. Squeeze them out and scrub them thoroughly.

Soak them in bleach

Mix one gallon of water and ¾ cups of bleach in a bucket and allow the toys to soak overnight. After taking the toys out of the solution rinse them with water several times before putting them out to dry.

Cover the holes

A lot of bath toys have holes in them to allow your kids to squirt water or make squeaky noises. While this might be entertaining for them, it also easily allows the toys to store water and grow mold. When you are sure the toys are thoroughly dry, plug up the hole with a drop of hot glue.

Run them through the washer

A simple solution to remove the mold from your child’s toys is running them through the dishwasher or washing machine. It’s an easy way to get the job done.

Preventing Mold in the Bathroom

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

Mold in your Bathroom? Call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook - (630) 573-4290.

The bathroom is one of the most common places in a home where mold can grow. The damp and usually dark conditions make it a perfect place for mold to thrive. However, if you reduce the amount of moisture in the bathroom and clean it frequently, the chances of mold growing will be greatly reduced. Here are some essential tips on how to prevent and reduce mold in the bathroom:

  • Ensure you have proper ventilation by opening a window or by running your exhaust fan for 30 minutes after you shower.
  • Use your air conditioner or dehumidifier to keep your household relative humidity levels below 50 percent.
  • Fix any leaking toilets, sinks or pipes, which can cause excess moisture.
  • Make sure your moisture problem isn’t coming from a leaky roof or overflowing gutters.
  • Wipe down your shower often. Wiping down your shower after using it removes any lingering moisture.
  • Eliminate damp hiding places for mold like wallpaper, fabric curtains, even bathroom rugs. If you’re going to have rugs and store towels in the open in your bathroom, be sure to wash them often.
  • If you don’t have shower doors, be sure to use a mold and mildew resistant curtain.
  • Keep it light in the bathroom. Since mold likes darkness you can discourage it by opening your bathroom shades, leaving your lights on (you can get a timer) or even installing a sky light.
  • Make bathroom cleaning part of your daily routine. Spray your shower and tub with a commercial shower spray that contains bleach or another mold/mildew fighting ingredient. If you have marble, always read the label first to be sure the spray is safe to use

Is Hidden Mold Lurking?

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

This mold was found behind a kitchen cabinet.

You may suspect hidden mold if your home or building smells moldy, but you cannot see the source, or if you know there has been water damage at the property. Mold may be hidden in places such as the back side of dry wall, wallpaper, or paneling, the top side of ceiling tiles, the underside of carpets and pads, etc. Other possible locations of hidden mold include areas inside walls around pipes (with leaking or condensing pipes), the surface of walls behind furniture (where condensation forms), inside ductwork, and in roof materials above ceiling tiles (due to roof leaks or insufficient insulation).

Investigating hidden mold problems may be difficult and will require caution when the investigation involves disturbing potential sites of mold growth. For example, removal of wallpaper can lead to a massive release of spores if there is mold growing on the underside of the paper. If you believe that you may have a hidden mold problem, please call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook for help.

Tips on how to maintain your sump pump

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

If you experience water damage caused by a sump pump, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook (630) 573-4290.

The arrival of spring often signals lots of melting snow and heavy rainfall. If you have a damp basement or live in an area prone to flooding, you know that dealing with water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare.

A sump pump can be an effective device for moving accumulated water away from your house and preventing costly repairs. Here are a few tips to keep your sump pump in good working order.

  • Ensure the unit is plugged in to a working ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet and the cord is in good shape.
  • Check the discharge pipe and vent hole for dirt, gravel and other debris. Clear any obstructions, as these cause the pump to work harder to drain the sump basin and increase the chance of overflowing.
  • Inspect the intake screen for clogs and remove any debris.
  • Remove any visible debris from the pit, and ensure the float component is unobstructed.
  • Test the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the basin. As the water level rises, the float should trigger the pump to activate and drain the water quickly.
  • If your pump has a backup battery, replace the battery every two to three years, or as directed by the manufacturer.

Conditions In Downers Grove & Oak Brook Might Be Right For Mold

4/5/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof and chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home.

Crawl space moisture can cause mold growth

4/5/2018 (Permalink)

Keep an eye out for mold in your crawl space.

With excessive crawl space moisture, mold will grow at a rapid pace. Crawl space mold can be damaging to your home's structure, your flooring, and anything else located in the area.

Mold survives on organic materials, such as wood, and when it's damp it provides the perfect environment for growth.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Tornado Safety Tips - Be Prepared!

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Safe from a Tornado!

Tornadoes are one of nature’s most violent storms and can cause death, injury, and destruction within seconds.  Here a few tips from Ready.gov on how to protect yourself and your family at a time when every second counts.

Know your risk

What:

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground and is often—although not always—visible as a funnel cloud. Lightning and hail are common in thunderstorms that produce tornadoes. Tornadoes cause extensive damage to structures and disrupt transportation, power, water, gas, communications, and other services in its direct path and in neighboring areas. Related thunderstorms can cause heavy rains, flash flooding, and hail.

Where:

About 1,200 tornadoes hit the United States every year and every state is at risk.

When:

Tornadoes can strike in any season, but occur most often in the spring and summer months. They can occur at all hours of the day and night, but are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Tornado Facts:

The extent of destruction caused by tornadoes depends on the tornado’s intensity, size, path, time of day, and amount of time it is on the ground. Wind from tornadoes can reach more than 300 miles per hour, and damage paths can be more than 1 mile wide and 50 miles long. Wind from tornadoes can destroy buildings and trees, transform debris into deadly projectiles, and roll vehicles.

  • They may strike quickly, with little or no warning.
  • They may appear nearly transparent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.
  • Tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
  • Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
  • Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water.

Know the Terms:

Familiarize yourself with these terms to help identify a tornado hazard:

  • Tornado Watch - Tornadoes are possible. When there is a Watch, move to be near enough to a shelter or sturdy building to be able to get there quickly in a few minutes if there is a Warning or if you see signs of a tornado approaching. Remain alert for approaching storms.
  • Tornado Warning - A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.

During a Tornado:

If you are under a tornado warning, seek shelter immediately!  Most injuries associated with high winds are from flying debris, so remember to protect your head.

Call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook - 630-573-4290 if you experience storm damage.

Generator Safety Tips - To Keep your Business Running

3/15/2018 (Permalink)

Keep your business running with the help of a portable generator.

In an emergency, portable generators offer lifesaving benefits when outages affect your business. They can safely power important electrical equipment such as portable heating units, computers, water pumps, freezers, refrigerators and lighting. However, portable generator use can also be very hazardous.

If you plan on using an emergency generator, it’s essential that you take precautions for your safety and the safety of those working to restore power.

Follow these tips for safe portable generator use from the NSC:

  • Always read and follow the manufacturer's operating instructions before running generator.
  • Engines emit carbon monoxide. Never use a generator inside your business or other enclosed areas.
  • Only use your generator outdoors, away from open windows, vents, or doors.
  • Use a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector in the area you’re running a generator.
  • Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable. Allow the generator engine to cool at least 2 minutes before refueling and always use fresh gasoline.
  • Never operate the generator near combustible materials.

If you experience Storm or Water damage due to a power outage in your commercial building, do not hesitate to give SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook a call at 630-573-4290.

Carbon Monoxide: Beware!

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide can be a silent killer.

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide, or CO, is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas, created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas and propane burn incompletely.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups— including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems— being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide.

An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or idling cars left running in garages.

Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips, provided by the United States Fire Administration.

  • Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year.
  • Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Make sure all fuel-burning vented equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials.
  • Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.
  • Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas. Never use grills inside the home or the garage, even if the doors are open.
  • Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.

Hoarding & Fire Safety

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

Firefighters cannot move swiftly through a home filled with clutter.

According to NFPA, many fire departments are experiencing serious fires, injuries, and deaths as the result of compulsive hoarding behavior.

What is hoarding?
Hoarding is defined as collecting or keeping large amounts of various items in the home due to strong urges to save them or distress experienced when discarding them. Many rooms in the home are so filled with possessions that residents can no longer use the rooms as designed. The home is so overloaded with things that everyday living is compromised.

Why do people become hoarders?
Hoarding is a mental disorder that can be genetic in nature, triggered by traumatic events, or a symptom of another disorder, such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, or dementia. Studies have found that hoarding usually begins in early adolescence and gets worse as a person ages. It is more common among older adults.

Why is hoarding an issue for the fire service?

  • Hoarding can be a fire hazard. Many occupants die in fires in these homes. Often, blocked exits prevent escape from the home. In addition, many people who are hoarding are injured when they trip over things or when materials fall on them.
  • Responding firefighters can be put at risk due to obstructed exits, falling objects, and excessive fire loading that can lead to collapse. Hoarding makes fighting fires and searching for occupants far more difficult.
  • Those living adjacent to an occupied structure can be quickly affected when a fire occurs, due to excessive smoke and fire conditions.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook has experience with cleaning hoarding homes.  If a family member is struggling and you need assistance, please call our office at 630-573-4290. We will be happy to assist you in making your home a safe place.

Kitchen Cooking - Stay Safe!

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

Cooking Fires can cause damage to your home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It’s important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire—oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains—away from the stovetop
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.

  • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.

Space Heater Safety Tips

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

Follow these guidelines when using a space heater. Stay warm and safe!

How to Use a Space Heater Safely

Half of all home heating fires happen during the months of December, January, and February. Our experts, as well as the pros at the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and the National Fire Protection Association, offer the following safety tips:

  • Place the heater on a hard, level, and nonflammable surface. They are intended to sit on the floor and not a table.
  • Establish a 3-foot kid- and pet-free zone around the heater, and never put a space heater in a child's room.
  • Keep the space heater at least 3 feet away from such combustible materials as furniture, bedding, and curtains.
  • Don't use a heater in a workshop or garage near paint, gas cans, or matches.
  • Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Unplug the heater when not in use by pulling the plug straight from the outlet. Check the cord for damage periodically, and don’t use it if it’s frayed or worn.
  • Don’t plug another electrical device or an extension cord into the same outlet as a heater, which can cause overheating.
  • Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home, and test them monthly.

Preventing Dryer Vent Fires

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

Keep your Dryer vents clean!

The importance of cleaning dryer vents:

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury or death. To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your home, SERVPRO® of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help clean dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup.

Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from the National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a bird’s nest, or other potential obstacles.

For more information on cleaning dryer vents, contact SERVPRO® of Downers Grove / Oak Brook Professionals at 630-573-4290.

Winter Storms on the Way!

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

Snow Shoveling Tips!

With a Winter Storm predicted to hit the Chicago Area this weekend are a few tips to think about before you start to shovel:

The Safest Way to Shovel Snow

When snow falls, most people wish they could curl up under warm blankets in bed or near a fireplace. Unfortunately, the reality is that most of us have to venture out into the real world despite the snow. But hurrying through the chore of shoveling snow off your driveway can cause bodily harm if you're new to harsh winter weather or are simply careless. Use these tips and your chances of injuring yourself will be much smaller.

Slow Down

Many people injure themselves while shoveling snow because they don’t allow themselves adequate time to finish the job. Set aside a large chunk of time to complete the job at a slow pace. If you can avoid it, do not attempt this in the morning just before work. And, give yourself at least 15 or 20 minutes longer than you think it will take you to shovel your driveway or sidewalk. You never know when you will have ice, packed snow, or cold winds fighting against you.

Take It Easy

If you have had any prior physical issues such as a heart attack, stroke or even high blood pressure, be especially careful while shoveling snow. Shoveling snow raises your heart rate because it is strenuous physical activity. Be sure to use your legs, not your back -- the same way most people advise to lift heavy boxes. This way, you won't unnecessarily strain your back and will have a strong footing in the case of slippery spots.

Use the Right Tools

Make sure you are using a strong, adequate shovel for the job. The old rusty shovel in the garage can make more work for you and be a hazard itself. Using a shovel that is either really small or too large can also be unsafe. Do not get a larger-headed snow shovel thinking it will make your job easier. A smaller shovel makes your job easier, but too small means it will also take forever.

If you have any weather related damage to your home or business please call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290

Store Information Online

There are many places to store important information securely online. Services like Google Drive and Dropbox offer free way to store different types of files, from a Word document to images of important documents. Ready.gov suggests saving an electronic version of insurance policies, identification documents, medical records, and information on your pets, if necessary.

Follow the News

Stay informed by following agencies such as FEMA, local news channels, and local government on Twitter for the most up-to-date information in a disaster situation. You can also alert first responders if a rescue is needed through Twitter.

Mark Yourself Safe

The American Red Cross offers a Safe & Well check-in site to list yourself as safe or find family and friends in situations where communication is difficult to establish. Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that is activated after natural disasters or a crisis. You will receive a notification from Facebook if you’re located in the affected area at that time.

Get in Touch

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in your phone and e-mail for communication with family, friends, business contacts, and others whom you may need to get in contact with before, during, or after a disaster.

Charge Up

Keep a portable charger in your car and home in case of an emergency. You may need to recharge this from time to time, but you can also buy solar-powered chargers as well.

Be Prepared: Wireless Emergency Alerts

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

Be Ready! SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook is faster to any size Disaster, Cal us today 630-573-4290

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are free notifications delivered to your mobile device as part of a public safety system provided by authorized government-alerting authorities. The alerts are designed to inform you of imminent threats to safety or missing persons alerts in your area (e.g., AMBER Alerts). Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service. A WEA can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm’s way, without downloading an app or subscribe to a service. WEAs may be used to share extreme weather warnings, local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action, AMBER Alerts, and Presidential Alerts during a national emergency.

A WEA will look like a text message. The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert. The message will be no more than 90 characters.

Beware of Extremely Cold Temperatures!

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

If you experience a cold weather emergency, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook today at 630-573-4290.

According to the National Weather Service, $2.84 million dollars of property damage was caused by extreme cold in 2015. Even scarier? Fifty-three people died and three were injured due to extreme cold the same year. It is important to be aware of the effect extremely cold temperatures can have on you. The two main conditions to be aware of are frostbite and hypothermia.

Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms are white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, and numbness.

Hypothermia is when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature, caused from long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone’s body temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately. To avoid these conditions, stay indoors if possible. If not, dress warm in layers and try to keep dry.

Winter Storms can cause Damage

1/23/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help with winter storm damage.

Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your home or business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook has the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather.

Ice Dams

An ice dam is formed when snow melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can back up under shingles, leak into a home, and cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.

Roof Damage

Snow and ice can cause significant damage to your gutters and roof. The additional weight of snow and ice can even cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The repetition of freezing and thawing cycles can cause small cracks to get larger.

Commercial Water Cleanup in Oak Brook

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

If your business has a flooding event due to frozen water pipes, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290

The Chicago area has been experiencing extremely cold temperatures this past week and with the slight warm up at the end of the week, pipes began to burst.  SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook responded immediately to a commercial building in need of professional services after a broken pipe.

Here are a few tips that you can follow to prevent your commercial building from frozen pipes:

5 Steps to Preventing Burst Pipes:

  1. Insulate all water pipes that run along the exterior of the building or those that are located in unheated interior spaces.
    2. Inspect water pipes on a regular basis, looking for any signs of small leaks or fatigue that could cause them to fail in a big way when the freezing temperatures arrive.
    3. Run water at a slow drip to relieve the pressure that can burst a pipe in the case that it does freeze.
    4. Check all shutoff valves and levers to make sure they are in pristine working order.
    5. Keep utilities on in vacant units- if you have vacant units, the cost of maintaining utilities in that unit will offset the cost of loss that could result from the lack of heat or water movement which causes frozen pipes and subsequent water damage.

Snowstorm & Extreme Cold Weather Tips

Snowstorm Safety Tips

Winter weather has arrived in Chicagoland area.  It is extremely important to be prepared when a winter storm occurs.  A winter storm can range from freezing rain and ice to moderate snowfall over a few hours, to a blizzard that lasts several days.

Here are some tips to help you be prepared when a storm hits:

During Snowstorms and Extreme Cold

  • Stay indoors during the storm.
  • Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the day; don’t travel alone; keep others informed of your schedule and your route; stay on main roads and avoid back road shortcuts.
  • Walk carefully on snowy, icy, walkways.
  • Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow.
  • Keep dry. Change wet clothing to prevent a loss of body heat.
  • If you must go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing.
  • Wear mittens, which are warmer than gloves.
  • Wear a hat and over your mouth with a scarf to reduce heat loss.

Tips for being prepared for a Power Outage

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Be prepared for a power outage!

Power outages can not only be dangerous to you and your family, but they can also cause immense stress if you are not properly prepared.

According to ready.gov:

Before a Power Outage:

  • Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.
  • Make sure you have alternative charging methods for your phone or any device that requires power.
  • Charge cell phones and any battery powered devices.
  • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it.
  • Purchase ice or freeze water-filled plastic containers to help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
  • Keep your car’s gas tank full-gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps. If you use your car to re-charge devices, do NOT keep the car running in a garage, partially enclosed space, or close to a home, this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by visiting your state’s or local website so you can locate the closest cooling and warming shelters.
  • If you rely on anything that is battery-operated or power dependent like a medical device determine a back-up plan.

During a Power Outage

  • Only use flashlights for emergency lighting, candles can cause fires.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Most food requiring refrigeration can be kept safely in a closed refrigerator for several hours. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours.
  • Take steps to remain cool if it is hot outside. In intense heat when the power may be off for a long time, consider going to a movie theater, shopping mall or “cooling shelter” that may be open in your community. If you remain at home, move to the lowest level of your home, since cool air falls. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Put on layers of warm clothing if it is cold outside. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. Never use your oven as a source of heat. If the power may be out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (the home of a relative or friend, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
  • Turn off or disconnect appliances and other equipment in case of a momentary power “surge” that can damage computers and other devices. Consider adding surge protectors.
  • If you are considering purchasing a generator for your home, consult an electrician or engineer before purchasing and installing.
  • Only use generators away from your home and NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage, or connect it to your home's electrical system.

If you experience damage to your home or business after a storm, call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290 to remediate your damage.

Tips for Preparing your Business for Winter Weather

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your Business clear from winter weather.

Winter weather will be upon us very soon as we head into the winter months of the Chicagoland area.  Here are a few things to think about for your commercial property.

Tips for Preparing Your Business for Winter Weather

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.

Understanding the Mold Remediation Process

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation requires specialized training, equipment and processes.

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate the “typical” process:

Step 1: Emergency Contact 630-573-4290

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We will carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

Step 3: Mold Containment

We use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

Step 4: Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook Professionals use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook Professionals clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. They use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. They’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Christmas Tree Safety

Fire Safety Tips for your Christmas Tree

Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. Carefully decorating your home can help make your holidays safer.

Picking the tree

  • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Placing the tree

  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2" from the base of the trunk.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
  • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.

Lighting the tree

  • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer's instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

After Christmas

  • Get rid of the tree after Christmas. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

Cold Weather is coming! Look out for Frozen Pipes.

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe can lead to water damage in your home or business.

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.

If you experience water damage in your home or business caused by a broken pipe, call us today at (630) 573-4290.

Work Place Water Damage is Restored by SERVPRO

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.

However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at (630) 573-4290 for fast help.

Don't forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

Make sure to change your batteries in your smoke detectors.

In the beginning of November, we experienced Daylight Savings time which is referred to as "Fall Back" and changed our clocks.  Did you remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors? Keeping the batteries fresh in your home's smoke detectors is very important in preventing fires, fire damage, and smoke damage to your home.  Please take the time to download the proper instruction manual and/or online tutorial for you individual smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Most smoke detectors take 9 volt batteries, but that can vary from detector to detector.  Many firemen say keeping the batteries fresh in your home's smoke detectors and regularly checking them to make sure they are working properly are the most important thing you can do to help keep you and your family safe from a fire.

What Is Soot And Why Does It Form After Fire Damage?

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

Fireplaces can cause Smoke & Soot Damage to your home.

Clean Up from Fire & Smoke Damage Calls for Professional Help

Dealing with soot is one of the most time-consuming parts of fire damage restoration. Residue quickly settles on all kinds of surfaces after a fire, and the cleanup is a genuine struggle for homeowners who are dealing with the aftermath of a blaze. However, what is soot, and why does it form after the fire?

Soot is the fine brown or black powder that clings to and discolors surfaces in the home after fire damage. Soot is what gives items that charred and blackened look. Smoke is a by-product of the incomplete combustion of materials; as wood, paper, plastic and other materials burn during a house fire, they produce residues and release particles into the atmosphere.

The composition of soot makes it slightly sticky, which means it clings to surfaces and is difficult to remove. A smoke-damaged house does not feel like a home, SERVPRO will help with fire damage cleanup and restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

Our highly trained technicians arrive ready to thoroughly assess your property and devise the best cleaning plan for you. We advise you on which items are salvageable from soot damage and which are not.

If your home has soot, smoke and fire damage call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at (630) 573-4290.

Campfire Safety Tips

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

These campfire safety tips could save someone's life!

Campfires can be a lot of fun, whether they are in the backyard or a remote wilderness area. However, anytime there is a fire, there is a risk of fire damage. With a campfire, the two primary concerns are falling into the fire and the fire escaping and burning the surrounding area. The good news is that there are a few simple things that can help you and your family to stay safe around the fire.

Before building a fire, you should make sure that it is safe and permissible to build the fire. Though there are a number of factors to consider, a general rule is that campfires should not be built when wind speeds are above 15 mph. Campfires are at lower risk of spreading when it is raining, the ground is wet or the temperature is low. In severely dry conditions, governmental authorities may ban all burning. A quick call to a park ranger, fire department or the police should help you to determine if there is a burning ban.

Tripping and falling into the fire is one of the most serious risks of a campfire, especially when children are present. Before building the fire, the area around the fire should be cleared of logs, large rocks and anything else that may cause a person to trip. Parents should closely watch children and forbid them from running or playing near the fire. A 10-foot circle around the fire should be cleared of any flammable objects, including vegetation. Fires should only be built in fire rings that are on level surfaces to decrease the chances of injury or the fire spreading.

It is important that you make certain that the campfire is fully extinguished before leaving the fire or going to sleep. Large chunks of wood will burn for a long period of time and should not be added to the fire late at night. When putting the fire out, you should knock the wood down flat on the ground. Water should be poured over the fire and the coals and wood turned on the wet ground to extinguish both sides. Only after the fire is cool to the touch is it safe to be left alone.

Whether it’s a campfire or a home furnace fire, a little bit of fire damage prevention can help to ensure a safe experience.  The fire damage experts here at SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook are ready to help if your home or other structure is damaged by fire.

What is In Flood Water?

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

We have plenty of equipment to help dry out your home after a storm!

Not all water damages are the same. Many of our friends in DuPage County have found that out after recent flooding in our area. The cleanup caused by recent flooding is much different than say a burst pipe you may have experienced in the past. In this blog we will look at the different water types.

What we call “clean” water when referring to water damage is water from a broken supply line or a leaky faucet. Clean water is pretty self-explanatory; it comes from a clean source. Rain water CAN be considered clean water if it is an isolated incident not related to wide spread flooding.

The second type of water is “grey” water. Grey water is slightly contaminated water. A good example of grey water is drain from a dishwasher. Keep in mind that water types can change. Clean water left too long without cleanup becomes grey water as bacteria and other contaminates can begin to grow.

The final classification is “black” water. Black water is highly contaminated as it is the result of encountering sewage, chemicals, or harmful bacteria. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook always recommends you leave water damage cleanup to the professionals.  The type of water determines our protocol for proper cleanup.

If you have experienced flooding please give us a call at (630) 573-4290.

How to Keep Mold from Coming Back

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Keep an eye out for Mold in your home!

Mold is a serious problem. For some Chicago area homeowners, it can cause problems for the foundation of their home and even trigger health issues. At SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook, we know how dangerous it is. Many of our clients want to know how to prevent mold from coming into their home and prevent it from coming back. Many homeowners are delighted to learn there are easy steps they can take that will help with mold remediation. Such steps can help make sure the mold stays away from all areas of your home.

Moisture and Humidity

This problem is frequently caused by too much moisture and humidity in the home. Water encourages the growth of spores. If the initial treatment did not stop the problem, it's a good idea to think about where water in the home originates. We do our best to examine each area to make sure there is no problem with water. However, sometimes things can be missed. Water may be coming from other areas of the home as a result of a new problem. In that case, steps need to be taken to remove the moisture again.

Ventilation

Clean, fresh air can help get rid of mold. New mold remediation efforts may focus on bringing cleaner air into the home. It's a good idea to think about air circulation. If the air is stagnant, the problem can recur. Installing a ventilation system in each bathroom can help. Ventilation systems help remove water vapor and improve air circulation in your home. They're easy to install and can be turned on after a shower to remove the moisture in the air.

Periodic Cleaning

In addition to a ventilation system and a complete inspection of the property, it also helps to clean as often as possible. Cleaning helps with mold remediation efforts.  Vinegar is an effective cleaning agent that kills most mold species instantly. Distilled vinegar can be poured into a spray bottle and used to clean the walls each month. This will help kill any new spore growths. Wipe it down after cleaning to keep moisture out of your home.

If you see mold in your home please contact us at (630) 573-4290.

Mold is Present almost everywhere!

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can spread within 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. SERVPRO will use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Ten tips to help prevent water damage to your home

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Our equipment in action after a water loss.
  1. Disconnect hoses

Standing water in a hose may freeze back into the pipe. This may create an ice block that stops your water flow. The block may burst your pipes and create damage to walls, floor and foundation.

  1. Clean gutters and downspouts

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams. Standing water can cause damage to your gutters and roof, and unmanaged overflow may create puddles that could damage your foundation.

Don't forget to clean downspouts to ensure water can flow through, and secure downspouts so that they point away from the home.

  1. Maintain trees and vegetation

Thriving shrubs can be a beautiful thing — except when their roots wrap around your pipes and break them. That's why it's important to minimize landscaping near utility pipes or, if necessary, remove trees and shrubs that have become too big.

Interior Measures to Prevent Water Damage

  1. Know your water main

Know the location of your water main, and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.

  1. Check appliances regularly

Check and maintain your home appliances regularly for leaks, according to manufacturer's directions.

  1. Investigate leaks right away and fix promptly

If you ignore moisture damage or postpone making the necessary repairs, be prepared to experience mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage to your home.

Keep in mind that homeowner's insurance provides coverage for damage that is sudden and accidental. Damage that results from lack of maintenance is not covered on a standard homeowner’s insurance policy.

  1. Upgrade washing machine hoses

Old, brittle or leaky washing machine hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for homeowners. Replace yours regularly to avoid a mighty mess and expensive damage.

  1. Install water detection devices

A water detector is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor comes in contact with moisture. Its main benefit is that it detects low moisture levels or slow leaks that often go unnoticed. Install it near water heaters, sump pumps, washing machines, dishwashers and toilets to prevent extensive damage and mold growth.

  1. Check your water pressure

If the water pressure to your home is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under the pressure. Buy a water pressure gauge at a local hardware store, attach it to an outside faucet, and turn the faucet to full force. The gauge will give you a reading of the home’s water pressure.

Typical residential water systems are designed for water pressure of 40 to 70 psi. If your home’s water pressure exceeds 100 psi, install a pressure regulator (which is available at hardware stores as well.)

  1. Monitor your water bill

Sometimes, the only way you know that water is leaking is taking a closer look at your water bill. If your usage jumps significantly from one month to the next without explanation, put your "water detective hat" on. Is there a leak in your crawlspace? Or, is it a pipe in your front yard? Don't leave mystery leaks unattended!

Flooding in Your Business

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

a workplace flood can be devastating to your business.

The weather has been very unpredictable the past few weeks in our area.  We have experience heavy rains in a short period of time causing the sewer systems to back up and streets to flood.

If you see there is a flash flood watch, this means that a flash flood is possible.  A flash flood warning means that a flood is about to happen or already taking place.  If a flash flood occurs, you should make sure everyone gets to higher ground as quickly as possible.

Your business can prepare for any potential disaster, including flash floods. Keep all essential equipment and documents elevated from the floor.  Ideally, they should be stored on the second floor of the building or higher.  Back-up electronic data daily to cloud storage or to an external drive so the files can still be accessed in the event of a disaster.

It is a good idea to have a battery-powered radio available on-site.  In case of a power outage, you and your staff can keep updated on the current conditions.  (FEMA) The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a list of recommended supplies in the event of a disaster, such as a flashlight and first aid kit.

You can also check with the National Weather Service to get more tips on safety during flooding.

SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook can help your business get back on track after flooding or other disasters.  Call us today for more information (630) 573-4290.

Safety First after a Flood

9/5/2017 (Permalink)

Be Prepared after a Flood.

AFTER A FLOOD

SAFETY FIRST (For businesses and home owners)

Account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.

If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers.

While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.

Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.

Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).

Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.

Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.

Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.

Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

The Power of the Dehumidifier

8/23/2017 (Permalink)

Here is a SERVPRO Dehumidifier ready for action.

SERVPRO Franchises across the country use dehumidifiers of varying sizes to dry water losses and the structure to prevent mold growth and return your structure to its original state. These dehumidifiers aren’t like the ones that are in stores, but an industrial grade dehumidifier specific to flooding and various categories of water losses.

These are the benefits of the dehumidifiers that we use here at SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook:

  • An industrial grade dehumidifier aims to lower the air temperature of the room, so condensation can occur.
  • These dehumidifiers can also speed up the drying process because the technology of newer dehumidifiers is more efficient and lowers the cost.
  • Our dehumidifiers can be implemented into large-scale places like a gymnasium, pools and other large scale businesses and community centers.

The industrial grade dehumidifier can allow for a faster and more precise drying than simple fans or home dehumidifiers. For any questions about our equipment or any of our various services offered call SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook at 630-573-4290.

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, courtesy of the NFPA, can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home

  1. Watch your cooking - Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

  5. Inspect electrical cords - Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

  10. Install sprinklers - Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

September is National Preparedness Month and SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook is a committed to helping to promote the importance of preparedness planning.

The theme this year is Disasters don’t plan ahead.  You can!

The first step is to make a plan.  With the help of the resources available from ready.gov, you can be ready for a disaster before it strikes.

Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

Step 1: Put together a plan with your family to discuss a communication plan & an evacuation route.

Step 2:  Consider specific needs in your household.

Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan

Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household

Contact SERVPRO® of Downers Grove / Oak Brook for more information and tools to help you be “Ready for whatever happens.”

Thunderstorm Safety Tips

Keep your family Safe!

Here are some guidelines to follow to help keep you and your family safe:

  • The best defense against thunderstorms is to stay inside a sturdy building or shelter that can protect you from deadly lightning, large hail, damaging winds, flooding rain and tornadoes. Fortunately, thunderstorms typically do not last very long and will most often pass by your location in less than one hour.
  • Once in a shelter, stay away from windows and avoid electrical equipment and plumbing. Remember to bring pets inside. If there is time, secure loose objects outside as these objects often become dangerous flying debris in high winds.
  • Postpone outdoor activities until the storms have passed.
  • If caught outside, take shelter in a sturdy enclosed building or hard top automobile immediately. Avoid open spaces, isolated objects, high ground and metallic objects.
  • Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning.

If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to the lowest level basement of your shelter, putting as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible.

Downers Grove / Oak Brook Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Downers Grove / Oak Brook Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Downers Grove / Oak Brook will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
